Thereare many challenges and drawbacks that are associated with ICD 9which necessitates the adoption of ICD 10. ICD 9 has been in use inthe health care system for over thirty years. The nature of thehealthy care system 30 years ago is significantly different comparedto the modern days. The nature of health care problems as well thepatients have changed. Patients are more informed about the issuesaffecting their health, take more precautions and medical workers aredealing with completely different types of challenges facing themodern society. Thus, ICD 9 does not offer a detailed description ofthe diagnosis and medical procedures in the modern health caresystems. Additionally, it uses antediluvian medical terminologies,methods of collecting patients’ data and procedures. Thus,transition into the more modern ICD 10 is investable (Bowie, 2014).

Themain reason why adoption of ICD 10 makes sense is the fact that itincorporate recent finding in medical technology. ICD 10, unlike ICD9 enables the incorporation of evidence based practice in the healthcare system. Additionally, it gives medical workers less burden byproviding more details that support documentation. The adoption ofICD 10 will have a positive impact on reimbursement processes andoptimization of groupings. ICD 10 increases the diagnosis codes bymore that five folds, which will obviously have a huge impacts on thedelivery of medical services. This is because the increased diagnosescodes with enhance the accuracy in recording clinical informationsuch as patient diagnosis. This translates into a more detailed andinclusive narrative that justifies the medical procedures on apatient. Although there will be an initial stage will becharacterized by confusion as medical practitioners get used to thenew system, as the chaos subsidizes, there will be few diagnosis gapsand improved billing. Additionally, ICD 10 will promote medicalresearch which has a positive impact on the medical profession(Bowie, 2014).
