Natureand Nurture: A Personal Reflection

Thereare personal characteristics that we are born with and there arethose that we acquire from our own life experience. In my case, Ihave realized and understood that I have a number of personal traitsthat I have. One of my characters is humility. Since I was born, Iwas humble and I am told that it is an inborn personal trait thismakes it my nature. However, I believe that my humility is alsoinfluenced by my Chinese culture, which introduces the concept ofnurture. The Chinese culture expects young Chinese girls to maintainhumility at all times in the process of building a character.

Inaddition, I am very assertive in the way I communicate and relatewith people. I think this trait originates from my father who isknown to be the most assertive sibling in his family. However, Ilearnt in a school that taught us drama and public speaking, whichmakes me think the environment there influenced my assertiveness.Looking back at these traits, I believe that the environment hasplayed an important role in improving my inborn traits. Therefore, Iconclude that all traits are determined by nature, but realized andperfected through nurture. This means that nurture perfects theconcepts of nature.

Fromthis class, especially the movies, I took the idea of seeing thingsdifferently as an important aspect of change. In the movies, the ideaof seeing things with a different perspective occurred in someinstances. This is the same idea I have picked from this class as Ihave learned to embrace the world from a different perspective. Thisis particularly important for me because my perspective as a modernChinese girl has changed with the class. I believe this is theessence of introducing change to the world, especially with thecurrent influence of globalization and modernity.
