MentalDisorders

Ihave a cousin who has lately indicated signs of feeling sad and down.He seems confused in his thinking with a low aptitude to think andconcentrate. He constantly appears to be in fear, worried and extremefeelings of guilt. Also, he is constantly withdrawn from friendsespecially whenever we meet during family functions. Whenever I askhim what the matter is, he reports feeling significantly tired and atvery low energy levels (Scott, 2003). Lately, he has begun indulgingin heavy alcohol drinking. His levels of anger have increased eversince he lost his lastborn son. Many are times that he gets angry forpetty reasons and tends to overreact. I suspect that he is developinga mental illness disease (Tartakovsky, 2015).

Goodman(2013) argues that the media is damaging the depiction of mentalillnesses. Wonderland is a drama that is set in a psychiatricemergency room of a hospital in New York. The opening scenes depict aman that is suffering from schizophrenia. He opens fire in TimesSquare and ends up piercing a pregnant physician in the stomach witha knife. The movie was cancelled with immediate effect due todwindling ratings (Goodman, 2013). It also received heavy criticismfrom groups that are concerned about mental health in the UnitedStates of America. That specific scene in the movie portrays mentalillness with exaggerated seriousness. By stabbing the physician inthe stomach and bearing in mind that she was pregnant, it displays anappalling characteristic of mental illness patients (Goodman, 2013).

Thedisplay of such scenes affects the self-image of mental illnesspatients and specifically the ones that are undergoing treatment. Itcan affect their progress in healing by making them recall similarinstances that happened in their lives and contributed to theirstatus or stimulating their mind into acting aggressively. Suchscenes should be avoided as a protective measure to ensure thetreatment of mental illnesses (Scott, 2003).
