TheAssociation for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) maintainstwo major industry credentials, that is, the Certified MedicalTranscriptionist (CMT) and Registered ist (RMT)credentials. The difference between the two is that, whereas CMT examis meant for medical transcriptionists with already two years ofindustrial experience, CMT exam is meant for entry-level medicaltranscriptionists. RMT is a more basic certification intended forrecent graduates of formal medical transcription training programs. In addition, it is intended for those medical transcriptionists whowork in single-specialty environments like radiology or clinic. CMTis meant for people who already have RMT medical transcriptioncertification.

Toqualify for CMT certification, one needs to have experience of aminimum of two years in acute care medical transcription. Amulti-specialty equivalent can also work. To qualify for RMTcertification, one must have recently graduated from a medicaltranscription school. Alternatively, one must not be having more thantwo years of experience in the industry. Another requirement is thatone must not already be a Certified ist.

Thequestions in the test for both RMT and CMT are multiple-choicequestions, something that makes them slightly easier as compared tohaving to write the answers from memory. CMT tests involve ten lesserquestions compared to RMT. CMT is much advanced than RMT, whichimplies that someone with a CMT certificate is much likely to beconsidered for an employment opportunity than one with an RMTcertificate. RMT is undertaken when one is fresh out of school, meaning that chances of passing are higher. On the other hand, CMT isundertaken after two years of experience, which also improves chancesof success.

IfI were to choose between the two certificates, I would choose CMTbecause it is more advanced. A holder of a CMT certificate basicallyneeds to be a holder of an RMT certificate. Given the two-year workexperience that one needs to sit for CMT tests, one is likely to passtoo.
