AlthoughJennifer gives a clear description of the case, a statement thatOlivia is in the second class is wrong. From the case study, Oliviahas changed her eating behaviors and joined exercise groups severalyears ago. Based on this information, it would be more correct toclassify Olivia in the fifth stage of transtheoretical model, whichis referred to as maintenance. According to Norcross (2015)individuals who have already sustained behavior change for a periodof at least 6 months and have an intention to sustaining healthybehaviors going forwards are classified in the maintenance stage.

Thestrategies that Jennifer suggests for facilitating transition fromstage to state and minimize setbacks are correct and effective. Thechange of behavior can be successfully achieved by setting a plan,goals, and motivating the affected persons to continue to adoptpositive and healthy behaviors. Jennifer identifies social supportand reinforcement as some of the key factors that can help peopletransition from stage to stage. This is consistent with the Skinner’stheory of reinforcement, which holds that change of behavior andachieved through either negative or positive reinforcement (McLeord,2007).

Althoughit is true that a reflection on the previous stages can help inreducing setbacks, prior planning for each stage is the mosteffective way of ensuring that hitches do not occur. This impliesthat one can reflect on the previous stages as Jennifer suggests,identify mistakes in those stages, and then make a plan for theremaining stages in order to minimize chances for setback and therisk of failure (Hill, 2014).

Jenniferalso recommends health belief model as an alternative framework thatcan be used to assist Olivia. This is a wise suggest given that ameta-analysis conducted in 2010 indicated that the health beliefmodel is highly effective in correcting health-related behaviors(Carpenter, 2010).

Inconclusion, I agree with some of the ideas put forward by Jennifer inher post. However, I feel that Olivia should have been classified inthe fifth stage instead of the second one.

Theoccupational therapy would first be to work with her in order tocomprehend the process of change. This would include helping herunderstand how the changes occur, the expected gains, spiralingnature of change and the setbacks that may occur. I would usediscussions and counseling to encourage the consciousness of Oliviareflection on her recognition of diverse behaviors and behaviors. Thecurrent stage can be presented as preparation

Thestages can be presented with her current behaviors that have made hergain weight and interfered with weight loss. She can also have thehealth consequences of the behaviors.

Helpingher to the next stage

Withsupport from a therapist, she could go to the health library and getthe long term results of addressing the concerns. I would also useintervention strategies such as developing social support, personalgoal settings, reevaluation and evaluation and self reward systemcould be introduced. If Olivia consider the strategies, she wouldcome back to revise where she failed.RemedyingSetbacks

Iwould recommend that Olivia should participate in a group basedsocial learning principles in that she can benefit from hearing otherstrategies. The group will assist her in building her self esteem asshe shares her own strategies and accomplishments.

Oliviawould meet with occupational therapist to identify new strategiesthat she heard. Olivia would develop a plan with coaching as neededby the therapist to try the new strategy.Theory

Thetheory that can be used is constructivist where the client directswhat is learned and how the learning will come. The theory can beapplicable to Olivia case in brainstorming, independent exploration,and individual problem solving and asking her questions

Oliviawould be encouraged to view the setbacks or the obstacles to changeas predictable and typical. When the setback occupy, theoreticalframework can be used the practitioner would reinforce the benefitsof conscious comprehension of spiraling nature of the progress
